West Virginia theme coming together

The WV themed project is coming together.  Hopefully, by next week I can have all pieces cut and start to foil the pieces.  I am very impressed with the other teacher's pieces.  I am thankful for being around all of these wonderful teachers and the interactions that we have together.

West Virginia themed glass project begins

Looking over some of the templates that other teachers have drawn for this project, I am anxious to see how everything turns out for everyone.

For my project I am using a picture that I took at Blackwater Fall in early summer.  I sketched it out and added some color to get a feel for different colors I would need.  I traced a copy of my template on sketch paper so I can cut out each piece.  Unlike the first project the glass I will be using for this project is more opaque and difficult to the pattern through it.

This is initial sketch for my project.  I did add some straight line to create smaller pieces to deal with.

Then after redrawing it I numbered my pieces, only 34 pieces for this one.
Then started to cut out my traced template, will begin to cut glass next Wednesday.

West Virginia theme

After thinking of what I could do for this piece I decided to have my hand at Blackwater Falls in Canaan Valley.  Will try to sketch this out for Wednesday afternoon.  On top of it all this is a picture that I took myself.  Will have to find just the right glass for the water coming over the falls.

Foiling and getting everything ready to solder

Foiling was a little bit of time consuming process.  There was a few pieces that I had to recut some of the pieces.  Will solder next week.  Wrapping my first project up.

Starting to grind and piece together.

We started the grinding process to smooth the glass down to make a smooth fit.  After grinding. I had to replace one piece that wasn't a very good fit.  This Wednesday I will foil the glass and solder the seems.   Piece #19 was giving me fits.

Anxious to get it completed this week.

Making the 1st project

This is really therapeutic for me.  Enjoyed cutting the glass and working the different colors of glass. As I cut it does get easier to cut and the breaks are cleaner.

Practice, practice, practice......

I need more practice, but I am hopeful that more practice will make better cuts.

Have a wonderful day :)

Introduction to Me :)

My name is Seth Floyd and I teach at Cabell Midland High School where I am a Chemistry teacher.  I teach AP Chemistry and General Chemistry in room G-210.  I have been at CMHS for 13 years.

I am planning to incorporate the process of glass making with respect with the specific chemical compounds that are used.   I always wanted to try this and the opportunity has arrived.

Have a wonderful time :)
